This DVD marks the first time a staged "Phantom" has been available for the home. And, frankly, as the music gets better, once it gets away from the dated cheesiness of organ-meets-'80s-pop that is the hallmark of the show's titular song, "The Phantom of the Opera," and into the beauty of such songs as "The Music of the Night." Sierra Boggess stands out as Christina, with a voice that grows stronger as the production progresses. Ramin Karimloo commands the stage throughout as the Phantom. Perhaps those are meant to intensify the mystery, but they seem gratuitous as the music and acting do plenty to move the production along.

In addition, cameras capture the action from so many angles it becomes dizzying at times, such as the quick cuts in one scene between Christina and her non-disfigured love interest, Raoul, or in the panning shots that are obscured by what look like balcony railings. To top it all off, a giant screen looms over all the action of the 200-plus actors and musicians. A catwalk stretches above the orchestra, where some of the action occurs. Most of the action occurs on the stage, but above the stage is a giant platform for the orchestra. The production's hugeness overwhelms the tiny screen.
